Jaeyun Sung, PhD

Jaeyun (Jae) Sung, PhD is a computational biologist interested in the gut microbiome and metabolism in autoimmunity. He is currently an Assistant Professor at Mayo Clinic (Rochester, MN) in the Department of Surgery, Division of Rheumatology, and Center for Individualized Medicine’s Microbiome Program. He received his BS in Chemical Engineering from Georgia Tech, and then his MS and PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He completed postdoctoral fellowships at the Asia-Pacific Center for Theoretical Physics (South Korea), and later at Massachusetts General Hospital and Broad Institute. In 2017, he joined Mayo Clinic to start his own independent biomedical data science laboratory focusing on multi-omic data analyses for biomarker discovery, and on understanding the role of human-associated microbial and viral communities in health and disease. The main mission of Dr. Sung’s research group is to develop novel computational tools to advance precision medicine for patients with auto-immune/inflammatory disorders. As a CLEAR-AD Diversity Scholar for Mayo Clinic, Jae aims to identify early markers of Alzheimer’s Disease, and to develop strategies for improving outcomes across diverse ethnic populations. In his free time, Jae enjoys traveling the world, playing sports, and catching up on his favorite podcasts and periodicals.
